In 1969, upon the advent of the Mini Mk III, the engine breathing system was greatly simplified - for the most part. 848, 998, 1098 and 1275cc (Cooper S) models used a hose running between the oil separator on the tappet chest cover and a boss on the carburetter (or carburetters, in the case of the Cooper S). |

The 1275 GT also started off with a single separator to carburetter hose, but since unlike the Cooper S the 1275 GT didn't have tappet chest covers, the oil separator was mounted on the flywheel housing. A second separator on the timing cover at the other end of the engine was added in 1971; from that point onwards each separator had its own hose connecting to a Y piece, with a further short hose connecting the Y piece to the carburetter. |

For the carburetter Cooper of 1990-91, a close approximation of the late 1275 GT system was used, with oil separators on the timing cover and flywheel housing together feeding crankcase fumes into the carburetter. A very similar system with detail changes was used on the 1275cc carburetter Mayfair and Sprite of 1992-94. |

Fuel Injection Crankcase Ventilation |

Fuel injected Minis took the oil separators from the previous HIF carburetter system and added a breather rail between them - other than that change, the principle is the same as before: the two separators feed crankcase fumes into the induction system. Single Point Injection (SPi) was used between 1991 and 1996; Multi Point Injection (MPi) replaced it from 1997 onwards, except for Japan which remained with SPi through to the end. |
